Basic skin care routine

Does the amount of products suggested by professionals these days, sound a little daunting ? Well lets go back to basics to find out what each product actually does and it's importance to the skin in your daily routine.

I think it is important to understand your skin and it’s needs before jumping straight in with complicated skincare and potentially causing further damage to your skin.

Step ZERO : This step is one that doesn’t get enough credit, this step is hugely important before that “expensive targeted” cleanser can do its job properly. Removing all traces of make up, excess oils, dirt and debris that sit on the surface of the skin from day to day. Although you may not wear make up, your skin still needs to be prepped before cleansing, the environment holds all kinds of pollutants and free radicals that can be extremely damaging to the skin if not removed daily !

(Think of it like your car windscreen, next time your cars been parked up over night or during the day while your at work, take a look at the debris on the windscreen before you drive off ! Those pollutants and dirt that you see ! That’s also on your skin !!!)

Step One : Using your targeted cleanser specifically for your main skin conditions to really clean and treat your skin in the most delicate or nourishing way ideally for each individual skin.
It’s very important you talk to a professional before choosing a cleanser to decipher what skin type you may have, as some cleansers like clay and gel cleansers can be very stripping for dryer more sensitive skins, potentially even causing more damage.

Step Two: Exfoliation
Exfoliation does wonders for the skin if used correctly ! Especially as we get older our skin cell turn over slows down and those dull sluggish skin cells that contribute to congestion, dryness and dullness often need a boost to aid the cell renewal and exfoliation does exactly this. Exfoliation 1-3 tines weekly depending on what your skin therapist has prescribed for your skin. I can guarantee you will notice a brighter smoother complexion after the first use.

Step Three: Toning
A toner provides added hydration and penetration of further products. Your toner will soon become your best friend, not only does your toner further hydrate the skin but prevents product wastage ! The use of a toner will prevent you from using so much of your beloved moisturiser and further absorption of your moisturiser means not using so much. Which proves super economical.

Step Four: Moisturise
Your moisturiser not only nourishes the skin it also acts as a barrier for pollutants and free radical damage in our external environment! There’s a huge range of moisturiser out there in the market ! For any skin type !!

Final Step (DAILY) : SPF
Sunscreen is extremely important for every day use even if it’s not a sunny day. Sun damage is one of the worst causes of pigmentation and aged skins and most importantly skin cancer. Especially in the harsh Hawkes Bay sun.

Always seek help from a professional near you if you are unsure of any products before using them on your delicate skin
